The Millburn Board of Education meets Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Education Center, 434 Millburn Ave., with the first day of school just one week out.

The district's roughly 4,589 students across eight schools are scheduled to return Aug. 31, according to the district calendar, making Monday's session the board's last before classes begin. The district's agendas page had not posted specific agenda items as of Saturday, Aug. 22.

One item families may hear more about: the $5.66 million synthetic turf conversion at Millburn High School. Board President Abby Speltz presided over the July 23 meeting where the board awarded the contract to Thomas & Sons Builders LLC, the lowest of six bidders. The deal covers a $3,753,000 base bid, $691,100 in allowances and a $1,222,183 alternate for athletic field lighting. As TAPinto reported in July, construction timelines were to be announced once the contract was fully executed.

Resident Jeffrey Feld, speaking at that July 23 session, praised the board for scaling what was once a proposed $40 million Par 3 Conversion Project down to a joint effort with the Township Committee for under $6 million.

Beyond the turf project, the board faces a busy fall. Seven candidates have filed to run for three open seats in the Nov. 3 general election, according to Patch, citing Essex County Clerk filings. Board terms last three years, and members serve without pay. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 13, with early in-person voting running Oct. 24 through Nov. 1.
