Millburn Board of Education Vice President Priya Shivani is seeking a second term, citing expanded course access and a shift toward student-centered practices during her first three years.

Shivani is one of seven candidates competing for three open seats on the board in the Nov. 3 general election. She first won her seat three years ago and has since led the Governance Committee and served on the Program Committee, according to Patch.

When she first ran, Shivani said she made three commitments: prioritize student success through better opportunities, represent the community by listening and responding, and govern using data and transparency. She said her record reflects progress on all three.

During her first term, Shivani said the district expanded access to AP, honors and dual enrollment courses, created new academic pathways, changed grading practices and strengthened college application support. She also pointed to increased consistency across elementary schools and stronger relationships with college admissions offices.

"One of the changes I am most proud of is broader than any single policy or program: our district has moved toward a more student-centered philosophy," Shivani told Patch.

Her second-term platform centers on three areas. She wants to extend those student-centered practices to Millburn Middle School, including access criteria, grading and clearer academic pathways. She also wants the district to approach artificial intelligence with intentional leadership, citing her professional background in technology and finance as a business transformation leader. Shivani said the district should prepare students for a technology-driven world while protecting critical thinking, creativity and human interaction.

Her third priority is financial accountability. Shivani said she would continue focusing on transparency and assessing whether district initiatives are delivering measurable results.

Outside the boardroom, Shivani has served as a soccer team manager, assistant scoutmaster, PTO volunteer and class parent. Her older child began college in September. Her younger child is a freshman at Millburn High School.

Shivani is running alongside fellow incumbent Cynthia Longley Richards and five other candidates, including a three-person slate of Anna Ostrovsky, Christian Germa and Prasoon Saurabh. Gyanprakash Mishra has also filed to run.

New Jersey school board members are nonpartisan and unpaid. Early in-person voting runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. The voter registration deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 13.
