Livingston residents looking for a free creative afternoon can drop into the Arts Council of Livingston's gallery every Sunday this month for hands-on workshops and artist conversations.
The ACL is hosting the series from 2 to 4 p.m. each Sunday in August at its gallery at 240 East Northfield Ave. No registration or art experience is required.
Two artists anchor the lineup. Audrey Yankielun, a self-taught artist who left a corporate career to build a distinctive practice around postage stamps, leads the Aug. 16 session titled "Art as Remnants of Communication." Attendees will explore historic stamps, mixed media and how postal history shapes Yankielun's work. One of her stamp dresses is in the permanent collection of Ripley's Believe It or Not!
"To me, the postage stamp is the last 'remnant of the communication' between hopeful sender and eventual receiver," Yankielun wrote in a December 2025 artist statement for the Westfield Art Association. "What a shame to keep these colorful and beautiful stamps hidden away in an album on a shelf."
Maria Domenica Lupo, an internationally recognized artist and board-certified art therapist with a doctorate from Drew University, leads two sessions. On Sunday, Aug. 9, she guides participants through "Create a Dream-like Mandala." On Sunday, Aug. 23, she leads "Create a Personal Symbol in Clay." Lupo, a Newark native who earned her MFA in sculpture from Hunter College and later spent formative time in Cennina, Italy, is a recipient of the NJ State Council on the Arts Fellowship Award and teaches at Montclair State University, Caldwell University and Ramapo College.
The workshops connect to the ACL's current exhibition, "Oh, the Stories We Could Tell…," which features artwork by both Lupo and Yankielun and runs through Sunday, Aug. 30.
The ACL Gallery sits on the Licari site, a Green Acres-preserved open space with rolling hills, white-fenced stables and red barns. The full August schedule, including any additional sessions, is available through the township calendar.
All sessions are free and open to all at the ACL Gallery, 240 East Northfield Ave., Livingston.
