The Millburn Board of Education holds its next public meeting Monday, July 20, at the Education Center, 434 Millburn Ave. No agenda had been posted as of Wednesday, July 16.
The session is the board's first since June 15, when members approved more than $330,000 in technology, software, and cybersecurity contracts for the 2026-27 school year on the superintendent's recommendation. That package included a $43,320 Comcast DDoS protection renewal, a $30,000 IXL Learning subscription for math and ELA, $28,000 for Renaissance FastBridge K-8 screening tools, and a 60-month Ricoh copier lease at $1,799 per month across six machines.
Pending district business that could surface at future meetings includes the $7.6 million synthetic turf conversion proposed for Millburn High School at 462 Millburn Ave. The project is structured as a 50/50 cost split between the Township and the Board of Education, with each side contributing $3.8 million. Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Committee Chairman Ben Stoller led a 5-3 vote on March 6 to dedicate up to 25 percent of the fund's annual balance toward the project, citing a cost comparison of $98 per playable hour for synthetic turf versus $371 for natural grass.
The project has drawn opposition. The Millburn Environmental Commission voted 6-1 on February 20 to urge both the Township Committee and the board to stop funding synthetic turf. A pending state bill, Senate Bill S2936, would ban municipalities and school districts from contracting for artificial turf installation. The Township Committee countered on March 3 by passing Resolution 26-082, formally opposing that legislation.
Mayor Frank Saccomandi said in February that construction would likely begin in June 2026, with fields ready by spring 2027. No public confirmation of whether that timeline held has appeared in district or township records.
Board meetings include a public-comment period. Families can check millburn.org for the agenda or any livestream details once posted.
