The Millburn Police Department wants residents to know that unlocked cars and homes are targets around the clock, not just after dark.
The department posted its "Lock It or Lose It" advisory on Tuesday, July 15, urging residents to lock vehicles, bring key fobs and valuables inside, and secure doors and windows during both daytime and nighttime hours. The alert appeared on the official Millburn Township website.
The advisory goes beyond the usual overnight reminders. The department stressed that residents should ensure security systems and exterior lights are activated and, for those with Ring cameras, consider adding one to the back of the home.
Neighbors looking out for neighbors is part of the message, too. The department encouraged residents to ask trusted neighbors to take in packages or check mail when they're away. "Safety is a community effort, so if you see something, say something," the department wrote in the alert.
The advisory does not cite a specific local incident. But the precaution echoes a pattern across Essex County. Neighboring Livingston Police issued a similar "Lock It or Lose It" campaign in March 2024 that cited a striking figure: approximately 60% of all thefts from vehicles are preventable. That advisory noted that thieves overwhelmingly target unlocked vehicles, even those parked in private driveways or inside garages left open.
The Livingston PD also warned that some vehicles have side-view mirrors that fold in when locked and the key is removed, meaning thieves can spot an unlocked car from a distance. Items tucked under seats, like a purse or laptop, may still be visible.
No specific crime data for Millburn was included in the July 15 advisory.
