Essex County residents can drop off old computers, televisions and other electronics at no cost on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the county's public works facility in Cedar Grove.

The e-Waste Recycling Day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 99 W. Bradford Ave. Residents must bring proof they live in Essex County, according to a Livingston Township alert. Short Hills, Millburn and Livingston households all qualify as Essex County residents.

No fee is charged.

The event accepts computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, televisions, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, speakers, keyboards, mainframes, telecom equipment, old cellphones, toasters and irons.

Under New Jersey law and local recycling ordinances, residents are required to recycle electronics. Garbage and recycling trucks will not pick up electronic items left at the curb, Livingston Township noted in a separate announcement for its own upcoming recycling event.

According to the Borough of Glen Ridge, which also posted the event details, the collection days give residents a single drop-off point for safe disposal and remove lead and other hazardous materials from the waste stream.

Livingston residents who miss the Oct. 17 county event have a second chance.

The township is holding its final free Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event of the year on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, 204 Hillside Ave. That drive-through event is limited to Livingston residents and includes on-site paper shredding, capped at five boxes per household.
