Essex County residents can drop off household hazardous waste for free on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Cedar Grove.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Essex County Department of Public Works, 99 W. Bradford Ave. Paint cans, car batteries, pool chemicals and other hard-to-dispose-of materials are all accepted. Residents must bring proof of residency. The site operates as a drive-through: stay in your vehicle and load items in the trunk beforehand. No containers, including gas cans, will be returned.

The event is not open to commercial or industrial facilities.

What's accepted

The Livingston Township civic alert lists the following accepted items:

  • Aerosol spray paints
  • Automotive fluids (antifreeze, motor oil, steering fluids)
  • Car batteries
  • Chemistry sets
  • Darkroom and photographic chemicals
  • Driveway sealer
  • Home fire extinguishers
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts
  • Gasoline and kerosene
  • Herbicides
  • Household cleaning fluids
  • Lithium and NiCad batteries
  • Mercury and mercury-containing products
  • Oil-based paints and stains
  • Paint thinners and solvents
  • Pool chemicals
  • Propane tanks (barbecue type)

Oil-based paints are accepted. The notice does not address latex paint.

Coming up: e-waste recycling day Oct. 17

Essex County is also holding a free Computer and Electronics e-Waste Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the same Cedar Grove location. That event accepts computers, monitors, televisions, printers, old cell phones and other electronics, according to a separate Livingston Township alert. Proof of residency is required for both events.
