A free blood pressure seminar is coming to the Millburn Free Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 18, giving residents a chance to learn how the condition is detected and managed before it causes serious harm.

The Millburn Health Department's "Understanding Blood Pressure" presentation runs from 1 to 2 p.m. at the library, 200 Glen Ave. Pre-registration is required.

The Township of Millburn announced the event on its official channels beginning July 21 and has continued promoting it through early August. The seminar also appears on the township's Health & Human Services webpage.

High blood pressure often goes undetected because it carries no obvious symptoms on its own, according to the Livingston Health Department, which described it as "the silent killer" in a July announcement for a related screening event. Left unchecked, it can dramatically increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The condition can be managed through lifestyle changes and, when necessary, medication.

The contact information points to the Nursing/Health Education Division based in Livingston, which appears to provide health programming for both Millburn and Livingston residents. The same division hosted a free blood pressure screening for Livingston residents on July 29 at the Livingston Senior/Community Center on Hillside Avenue.
