Looking to try something new in the kitchen? The Livingston Public Library is giving away free turmeric spice kits beginning Monday, Aug. 3, giving residents a chance to explore one of the world's most popular spices from home.

Adults can stop by the library at 10 Robert Harp Drive anytime during regular hours (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.) to pick up a kit while supplies last. No registration is required.

The giveaway is part of the library's monthly "Spice It Up!" series, which introduces residents to ingredients from around the world while highlighting the history and culture behind them.

August's featured spice is turmeric, the vibrant yellow root used in curries, soups, rice dishes and teas. Each kit is designed to help residents try the spice at home without signing up for a class or workshop.

The library is also continuing its summer lineup with "Let's Grow: How to Plant an Herb Garden" at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, when chef and educator Jenn Ponder will lead a hands-on container gardening program with culinary tips.

Residents can pick up turmeric kits starting Aug. 3 while supplies last.
