Firefighters freed a driver trapped inside a vehicle after a three-vehicle crash shut down Route 280 in Livingston on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Members of the Livingston Fire Department arrived at the scene at about 3:50 p.m. after reports of the crash with entrapment on the eastbound side of the highway, according to the West Essex Tribune. The Roseland Fire Department also responded.

Crews from both departments worked together to extricate the trapped driver. Roseland Emergency Medical Services then transported that driver to a local hospital for treatment.

Hatzalah of West Orange and Livingston, a volunteer EMS organization, transported additional injured individuals from the scene. The total number of people hurt and the severity of their injuries have not been reported.

The entire highway remained closed during the rescue operation. The duration of the closure was not specified.

The Livingston Fire Department is a volunteer department operating under a full-time chief and assistant chief. In 2025, the department responded to more than 1,200 calls for emergency service, according to its fund drive materials.

The cause of the crash and further details about the injured have not been released.
