Two candidates for Essex County's District 4 commissioner seat face voters at a free public forum on Wednesday, Sept. 23, in Livingston.

The League of Women Voters of Livingston is hosting the "Candidate Night" from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Livingston Community Center, 204 Hillside Ave. Incumbent Commissioner Leonard M. Luciano, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Adam Kraemer will both appear, according to Patch.

The event is free and open to the public. Residents can RSVP at livingstonlwv.org.

What's at stake

District 4 covers 11 towns: Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Livingston, Millburn, North Caldwell, Roseland, Verona, West Caldwell and West Orange. The seat is one of several on the Essex County Board of County Commissioners up for election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The board approves the county's annual operating and capital budgets, passes ordinances and resolutions, can override a veto by the county executive and can conduct investigations. Terms last three years.

The candidates

Luciano is the incumbent. He ran unopposed in the June Democratic primary. Kraemer, the Republican nominee, also ran unopposed in his primary.

Kraemer previously ran against then-County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. in the 2022 county executive race, earning 19.5% of the vote, NorthJersey.com reported.

The League of Women Voters of Livingston said the event will give attendees a chance to hear both candidates discuss issues facing Essex County and their priorities. Audience members will be able to ask questions directly.
