A free talk at the Livingston Public Library will make the case that laughing is good for your health.

The program, called "Chuckles, Chortles and Giggles: The Benefits of Laughter for Seniors," takes place Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the library's Tech Room. It is part of the library's observance of Healthy Aging Month, the West Essex Tribune reported.

Nairobi Vasquez, a health educator with Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center's Community Health program, will lead the session. According to the library's event listing, the talk covers how humor can reduce stress, boost mood, strengthen social connections and contribute to healthy aging.

The Atlantic Health listing describes the program's pitch simply: laughter, whether big or small, can make people feel better and may even help them live longer.

Archana Chiplunkar, the library's adult services and acquisitions librarian, told the West Essex Tribune the program aims to show that humor carries real physical and emotional benefits.

"Whether it's a quiet chuckle, a hearty laugh, or an unexpected giggle, humor has a powerful effect on both body and mind … and it may even help you live longer," Chiplunkar said.

The library categorizes the event as a wellness and mindfulness lecture for adults and seniors. Despite the title's nod to seniors, the program is open to all adults.

Registration is required. It closes at 2 p.m. on Sept. 9, the moment the talk begins. Residents can sign up through the library's online event calendar or by calling (973) 992-4600.

The Livingston Public Library is at 10 Robert H. Harp Drive.
