A film shot at Nana's Deli in Livingston topped Netflix's movie chart with 12.8 million views. "Don't Say Good Luck," produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company, premiered on the streaming service Aug. 14.
The film debuted at No. 2 with 8.1 million views in its first week before climbing to the top spot, according to Netflix viewing data reported by Seat42F. It remained No. 1 as of Aug. 25, Decider reported.
Residents who passed through South Livingston Avenue in early July 2025 could see the production in action. A Netflix crew temporarily repainted and rebranded Nana's Deli at 127 South Livingston Ave. as "Birenbaum's, EST 1985," dressing the windows with references to matzo ball soup, Reubens, pastrami and knishes, according to FilmiFeed. The deli closed briefly for filming and reopened July 9, 2025. Big trailers, lights and cameras lined the block.
West Essex Tribune photographer Jerry Siskind photographed Adam Sandler working behind the scenes during the shoot, the Tribune's Rob O'Connor noted in a Monday, Aug. 31 column. Ilpoom restaurant, also in Livingston, served as an additional filming location, MovieWalks reported.
Sandler stayed in Montclair during the shoot.
In the film, Sunny Sandler, Adam Sandler's daughter, stars as Sophie Birenbaum, a 15-year-old who lands the lead in her high school's production of "Waitress" just as her mother's cancer returns. The Birenbaum family runs a Jewish deli. The deli walls in the film feature real family photographs supplied by people involved with the production.
The story was inspired by co-screenwriter Laura Hankin's real experience: she was cast in the lead of her high school musical while her mother was battling terminal cancer. Julia Hart directed the PG-13 film, which runs one hour and 35 minutes. The cast includes Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Steve Buscemi, Bebe Neuwirth and Jon Lovitz.
"Sunny Sandler was the first and only person we thought of to play Sophie," Hart said in Netflix's Tudum press notes for the film's Aug. 14 premiere. Hart added that Sandler "absolutely exceeded" her expectations as an actor, singer and leader on set.
No local screenings or deli-related promotions tied to the film have been announced. Nana's Deli remains open at 127 South Livingston Ave.
