Livingston students head back to class Monday, Aug. 31, kicking off a 183-day school year that runs through Tuesday, June 22, 2027.
The Livingston Board of Education approved the 2026-27 academic calendar in April 2025. Staff report for professional development Wednesday, Aug. 26, and Thursday, Aug. 27, two days before students arrive.
Here are the major breaks and closures families should mark:
- Winter Recess: Dec. 24–31, 2026, and Jan. 1, 2027 (early dismissal Dec. 23)
- February Break: Feb. 16–19, 2027
- Spring Recess: April 19–23, 2027
- NJEA Convention: Nov. 5–6, 2026
- Thanksgiving: Nov. 26–27, 2026 (early dismissal Nov. 25)
The calendar builds in three inclement weather days. If snow days are needed, they come out of spring recess first. If none are used, the district will remove days from the calendar starting with June 1, then March 29 and May 28, potentially shortening the school year.
New state law adds a spring break wrinkle
A law Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed July 30 will require the state commissioner of education to recommend spring break dates for every district in New Jersey each year. The measure, S-170/A-5167, was sponsored by state Sens. Patrick Diegnan and M. Teresa Ruiz and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak.
Districts must consider the state's recommendation when building their calendars but retain the authority to set their own dates. The bill's sponsors say the law will help families with children in different districts coordinate vacation plans.
It won't affect this year. The law takes effect for the 2027-28 school year, according to Patch, so Livingston's current calendar stands. But when the board drafts next year's schedule, the commissioner's recommendation will be part of the conversation for the first time.
