Livingston Township is using a 3D Laser Crack Measuring System to scan all 109 miles of its roadways and determine which streets need repaving, according to a civic alert posted July 31 by the township.

Hearthstone Terrace and Blackstone Drive are next in line for paving. No start date has been set.

An independent consultant drove every mile of Livingston's road network and used the laser system to detect cracks and surface variances in the pavement. The township's Department of Public Works and Engineering staff then combine those ratings with their own regular inspections to set the annual paving schedule.

The program is separate from Millburn Township's Phase 2 paving project, which uses contractor JA Alexander and covers different streets.

Livingston has already been putting the program into action. The township announced on X on Wednesday, June 24, that it closed East Northfield Road eastbound between South Livingston Avenue and Old Short Hills Road overnight for milling and paving work.

How to report a pothole

Not every road in Livingston is maintained by the township. Which agency to call depends on who owns the street, as the township outlined on its Instagram page in March:

County roads in Livingston include Beaufort Avenue, Eisenhower Parkway, Kennedy Parkway, North and South Livingston Avenue, Laurel Avenue, East and West Northfield Road, Old Mount Pleasant Avenue, Old Short Hills Road, Passaic Avenue, Shrewsbury Drive, South Orange Avenue, and Walnut Street.
