Livingston residents must register to vote by Oct. 13 to cast a ballot in the Nov. 3 general election. The League of Women Voters of Livingston has been visiting senior facilities and college campuses across the area to make sure they can.
The group has stopped at senior living facilities around town to help older residents confirm their registration and learn about voting by mail, Amy Ipp, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Livingston, wrote in the West Essex Tribune on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The League also made three trips to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) campus in September and visited Caldwell University.
The Nov. 3 ballot carries contested local races for the Livingston Township Council, the Board of Education and the Essex County Commissioner seat in District 4. All U.S. House seats are also on the ballot.
In the District 4 commissioner race, incumbent Democrat Leonard Luciano faces Republican nominee Adam Kraemer, Patch first reported on Sept. 8. Both ran unopposed in their June 11 primaries. District 4 covers Livingston, Millburn, West Orange and eight other Essex County towns.
The League is hosting a Candidate Night for the District 4 race on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Livingston Community Center, 204 Hillside Ave.
The registration push follows a Sept. 14 Livingston Township Council proclamation recognizing National Voter Registration Day. Mayor Shawn Klein read from the proclamation at that meeting, calling on the township to affirm "free and fair elections" and urging "all eligible citizens to register and participate in our democracy," the West Essex Tribune reported on Sept. 16.
The deadline is firm. Residents who already signed up for vote-by-mail ballots should expect them soon, according to the League.
