Millburn High School students averaged a 1,391 combined SAT score in the 2024-25 school year, the highest among traditional public schools in New Jersey.

The ranking comes from an NJ.com analysis of state data published Wednesday, Sept. 9. Millburn placed seventh overall among all New Jersey high schools. The six schools ahead of it are selective magnet or vocational-technical programs that require students to apply and qualify for admission, led by Edison Academy Magnet School at 1,539.

Millburn High, which enrolls students based on where they live, outscored every other neighborhood public school in the state.

How the scores break down

Millburn students averaged 700 on math and 691 on reading and writing. The statewide averages were 519 on math and 533 on reading and writing, for a combined 1,052. The national combined average was 1,029.

AP and U.S. News results

The SAT result follows other recent recognitions for the Essex County school. In February, the College Board named Millburn High to its 2025 AP School Honor Roll at the Platinum level, the highest distinction. According to district data, 81% of seniors took at least one AP exam, 96.2% of test-takers scored a 3 or higher, and 53% of seniors sat for five or more AP exams. The school offers 35 AP courses taught by 44 teachers.

"This achievement reflects our collective commitment to academic excellence and the culture of high expectations that defines our school community," Principal Robert Nixon Jr. said in February when the AP honor was announced.

No district officials have commented publicly on the SAT ranking as of Friday, Sept. 11.

Millburn High also ranked second among non-magnet public high schools statewide in U.S. News & World Report's 2026-27 Best High Schools survey, according to a Patch report in August.
