Millburn Township has installed an all-way stop at the intersection of Hobart Avenue and Station Plaza, near the Short Hills train station.

The township announced the new traffic pattern Thursday, Aug. 27, on its official website and X account, urging drivers to use caution in the area. The announcement did not specify when the stop signs went up.

The signs are up.

The change is part of a broader pedestrian safety project focused on the eastbound side of the Short Hills station. That project also calls for extended sidewalks, narrowed lanes and bumpouts, according to TAPinto, which first reported on the project's progress in July.

A $479,000 Safe Streets to Transit grant is funding the work, according to Millburn Pedestrian Safety Advisory Board minutes from Feb. 9. Those minutes set a target of completing construction before December.

The Township Committee authorized the township to solicit bids for the project at its July 14 meeting. Committeeman Jamie Serruto said at that meeting, as TAPinto reported July 23, that the township held multiple public sessions to gather input from commuters, residents and business owners. "We had multiple information sessions and are looking to come to a final decision shortly," Serruto said.

Township Business Administrator Alex McDonald said at the same meeting that the bid authorization was placed on the agenda so the township could go out to bid as soon as the opportunity arose.

The all-way stop appeared as a discussion item at the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Board's June 11 meeting. Whether the remaining project elements, including the sidewalk extensions and bumpouts, have been installed or are still pending is unclear from available records.

The broader project is targeted for completion before December, and the next Township Committee meeting is scheduled for Sept. 1.
