A Short Hills home sold for $4.73 million, the highest residential sale recorded in Essex County for the week of Sept. 28–Oct. 4.

The single-family house at 19 Shelley Road fetched $4,725,851, according to NJ.com's weekly real estate report. Built in 1953, the 2,849-square-foot home sold for $1,659 per square foot, the highest price-per-square-foot figure on the county's top-10 list that week.

Six of the 10 priciest Essex County sales recorded that week were in Short Hills. The neighborhood claimed four of the top five spots, with only a $3,149,000 Montclair sale at 2 Russell Terrace breaking through at No. 3.

Here is how the other Short Hills properties ranked:

  • No. 2: 2 Troy Drive, $3,320,000. A 4,919-square-foot home built in 2017, at $675 per square foot.
  • No. 4: 19 Hilltop Road, $2,975,000. A 4,213-square-foot home built in 1951, at $706 per square foot.
  • No. 5: 14 Denman Court, $2,450,000. A 3,931-square-foot home built in 1973, at $623 per square foot.
  • No. 6: 24 Rippling Brook Drive, $2,108,108. A 3,046-square-foot home built in 1965, at $692 per square foot.
  • No. 8: 28 Kilmer Drive, $1,999,000. A 2,584-square-foot home built in 1942, at $774 per square foot.

The Shelley Road sale stands out for more than its total price. At $1,659 per square foot, it far exceeded every other property on the list, where the next-closest figure was $817 per square foot for the Montclair home.

Short Hills reclaimed the top spot after Montclair homes led the county for the weeks of Sept. 7–13 and Sept. 14–20. A $4.4 million sale on Union Street topped the earlier list, and a $3,325,000 sale on Midland Avenue led the later one.

The pattern is familiar. Short Hills has topped the county's weekly list in most weeks tracked since July, with top sale prices between $3.96 million and $5.2 million.

Across all of Essex County, 175 residential sales were recorded for the Sept. 28–Oct. 4 period, with an average sale price of $845,163. The NJ.com data reflects transactions where the title was recorded that week, even if the sale closed earlier. The Shelley Road transaction closed Sept. 8.
