The Millburn Free Public Library's third annual Community Picnic returns Saturday, Oct. 3, with food, games, a petting zoo and live music on the library field at 200 Glen Avenue.

The free event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and is open to everyone. The library and the Friends of the Millburn Library are co-hosting.

Organizers are asking neighbors to bring a dish for a potluck spread. Residents can sign up to cook or volunteer through a registration form on the library's website.

The library described the gathering in a Patch announcement as a chance for neighbors to meet, connect and celebrate the community's diversity. The afternoon lineup includes a mobile petting zoo, kids' crafts, games and music.

"Each year, we look forward to this magical day at the library with delicious homemade food, a petting zoo on wheels, crafts for kids, and more," Mary Moore, a Patch community contributor, wrote in the event announcement.

The Friends of the Millburn Library, the nonprofit co-host, funds library programs including museum passes for cardholders, the library's 3D printer, the Summer Reading program, the library garden and supplemental book and DVD purchases. The group's 2025–26 officers include President Sapna Gupta, Vice President Mara Epstein, Treasurer Lori King and Secretary Michelle Brubaker.

The Friends also sponsored the library's Summer Reading Kickoff Party in June, which drew families to the Glen Avenue lawn for ice cream and activities, according to the Township of Millburn. The picnic continues that pattern of free, outdoor programming at the library.

The event is free. No registration is required to attend, though the library encourages potluck participants and volunteers to sign up in advance.

The library's Instagram account posted a save-the-date for the picnic on Aug. 1, calling on residents to share a dish for the potluck spread.

Coming up: The library is closed Saturday through Saturday, Sept. 5–7, for Labor Day weekend. Chess classes begin Saturday, Sept. 12. The Fireside Book Club meets Monday, Oct. 5. Lego Build returns Wednesday, Oct. 7. Visit millburnlibrary.org for details.
