Millburn residents and landscapers have a few extra days to fire up gas-powered leaf blowers — but only to clear storm debris.

The Township Committee temporarily suspended the township’s seasonal gas-powered leaf blower ban through the end of business Friday, July 10, after recent storms left yards, streets and properties covered in debris.

The exception applies to both residents and registered landscaping contractors, but only for storm-related cleanup. After Friday, the ban returns and remains in place through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

Millburn’s gas-powered leaf blower ban, adopted in 2025, prohibits use from Memorial Day through Labor Day as part of the township’s effort to reduce noise and emissions. This is the first summer the restriction has been in effect — and the first time it has been temporarily suspended.

The move comes after severe storms over the July 4 weekend brought heavy rain and strong winds across the region, leaving downed branches, debris and widespread power outages throughout northern New Jersey.

The ordinance allows temporary suspensions after extreme weather events. Outside the approved cleanup window, violations can result in escalating penalties, including fines of up to $2,000 for repeat offenses.
