Pet owners in Millburn, Short Hills and Livingston can get their dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies at no cost on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Fire Department Headquarters, 459 Essex St.
The Millburn Health Department clinic runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Township of Millburn announced on X on Aug. 21.
The clinic matters because New Jersey law requires all dogs to be vaccinated against rabies, and Millburn's local ordinance extends that requirement to cats, according to state rabies guidelines. Dogs seven months and older must be licensed annually through the municipality where the owner lives, and the state requires proof of a current rabies vaccination to complete that process.
Getting vaccinations done in November gives residents a head start on the township's annual licensing deadline. Millburn charges a $10 late fee for pet licenses not renewed by March 1 each year, and fees run higher for unneutered animals, according to township licensing records. A free vaccination now means one fewer expense and one fewer errand when renewal season arrives.
The clinic announcement did not specify whether pre-registration is required. Other Health Department programs this fall do require sign-up in advance, so residents may want to call ahead.
The Health Department also hosts a free Autumn Walking Club that meets Fridays from Sept. 18 through Nov. 13 at 10 a.m., according to a separate township post. Pre-registration is required for the walking club.
