Millburn pet owners can get their animals vaccinated against rabies at no cost on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The Millburn Township Health Department will hold its annual free rabies clinic from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Millburn Fire Department Headquarters, 459 Essex St. The township announced the clinic on X on Thursday, Sept. 24, and the event also appears on the township's website.
The clinic is a recurring event. The township held the same clinic on Nov. 12, 2025, at the same location and hours, according to the township calendar.
Why it matters
Millburn Township requires all cats and dogs to carry a current rabies vaccination and to be licensed annually, according to the township's animal control page. Vaccinations must be valid through Oct. 31 of the license year. Because the Nov. 3 clinic falls after that cutoff, a vaccination that day would apply to the next licensing cycle, not the current one.
Pet owners whose animals' vaccinations lapse before Oct. 31 would need to visit a private veterinarian to stay in compliance for the current year. The free clinic, however, offers a no-cost option for owners looking to secure coverage ahead of the next license renewal period.
Rabies remains an active concern across New Jersey. The state Department of Health reported 26 animal rabies cases statewide as of March 31, with 20 involving raccoons, according to NJ.com. Raccoons account for the majority of rabid animals diagnosed in the state, followed by skunks, cats, foxes and groundhogs.
