A Millburn police officer's sharp eye led to the recovery of a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Washington state, Police Chief Brian Gilfedder told the Township Committee on Thursday, June 18.

Officer Dalakian spotted the vehicle in Millburn and initiated a recovery that required coordination with law enforcement agencies outside New Jersey, Gilfedder said during a formal awards presentation at the meeting, held at the Millburn Library on Glen Avenue. No arrest has been announced.

"When you're dealing with a vehicle stolen from across the country, it's not just a traffic stop," Gilfedder said. "It becomes a multi-state recovery effort."

The chief credited Dalakian's attention to detail for making the recovery possible, describing it as excellent work on a case that spanned multiple jurisdictions. The make and model of the vehicle were not disclosed by the department.

The commendation was a scheduled agenda item at the June 18 regular session, listed under "Police Department Awards presented by Police Chief Brian Gilfedder," according to the township's published meeting packet.

Also at the June 18 meeting, the Township Committee approved Resolution 26-158, appointing Dennis Padilla and Jack Larkin as police officers effective Tuesday, June 17. The two new hires bring additional staffing to a department that is simultaneously pursuing its fifth round of accreditation with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, a process Business Administrator Alexander McDonald confirmed was underway earlier this year.

The next Township Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m. at the Millburn Education Center, 434 Millburn Ave. Residents who wish to report suspicious activity can contact the Millburn Police Department's non-emergency line.
