Three Millburn roads closed Friday, Aug. 14, as the township's summer paving project pushed nine days past its original completion deadline with no official explanation for the delay.

Contractor JA Alexander shut down 249 Millburn Ave. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Adams Ave. at Birch Lane from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Taylor Rd. S. at Dogwood Dr. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the township's daily civic alert.

The Phase 2 project was supposed to be done by Aug. 5. It wasn't.

When the township announced the project on July 20, it said work would begin July 22 and anticipated completion "on all roads by Wednesday, August 5." The project has now run every weekday since, with the township posting daily closure alerts but offering no revised timeline and no statement explaining the overrun.

Friday's three closures mark a reduction from the six locations closed Thursday, Aug. 13, which included White Oak Ridge Rd. at Great Hills Rd., 215 Main St., and 85 Woodland Rd. in addition to the same three streets closed Friday. Whether the shrinking list signals the project is winding down remains unconfirmed by the township.

The same three locations — 249 Millburn Ave., Adams Ave. at Birch Lane, and Taylor Rd. S. at Dogwood Dr. — have appeared on closure lists every day from Monday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Aug. 14. On Aug. 5, the project's original final day, eight locations were still listed for closures.

Residents on affected streets should remove vehicles from driveways by 7 a.m. and can park on nearby side streets during construction. Motorists should follow posted detour signs through work zones.

The township has not made a named official available to comment on the delay. Residents with questions can contact the Township Engineer at [email protected] or 973-564-7050.
