Millburn's Recreation Commission will consider adding a bocce court and a portable cricket pitch to the township's parks Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Gero Park Community Center. Both proposals appear as new business on the meeting agenda, marking the first time either amenity has come before the commission. Director of Recreation Chris Myers will present options for both.
The cricket pitch idea follows a Cricket Clinic that Myers's department launched in April for students in grades 2 through 8. As of May, the clinic was running at the Bauer Community Center and Glenwood Elementary School, according to commission meeting minutes.
No location, cost estimate or design details for either the bocce court or the cricket pitch have been made public ahead of the meeting.
Commissioners will also hear updates on three ongoing projects.
Taylor Park playground renovation. The township broke ground Aug. 19 on a $1 million inclusive playground funded by a $750,000 NJ Green Acres grant and $250,000 in township capital funds. The project will create two play areas, one for ages 2–5 and one for ages 5–12, connected by an accessible pathway. The playground is expected to open in fall 2026.
"The park is designed with the needs of everyone in mind to offer a place of safe fun for all residents," Myers said in the township's Aug. 20 announcement of the groundbreaking.
Taylor Park entrance improvements. The low bid for entrance site work came in at roughly $323,000, about $150,000 below the original estimate, Myers reported at the commission's June 10 meeting. The contract award status has not been publicly confirmed since then.
Millburn High School turf fields. A shared services agreement between the township and the Board of Education covers construction, maintenance and use of new turf and lighted fields behind the high school. As of May, the project was expected to start in late August with completion in February 2027. The agenda lists the project under old business.
The meeting is open to the public. Commission Chair Nick Romano will preside. Residents who wish to speak during public comment will have three minutes each.
