Millburn senior linebacker Emil Carames earned Super Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in the Millers' 34-6 win over Paterson Kennedy.

Carames recorded four tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in the Friday, Sept. 25 league road game, according to NJ.com. The outside linebacker's stat line anchored a Millburn defense that held the Knights to six points.

NJ.com credited Carames with 14 tackles on the season and noted he has compiled 32 career tackles and two career sacks heading into Week 5.

The victory was Millburn's second straight and pushed the Millers to 2-1 in the SFC's Ivy Gold division, good for first place in the division standings, according to MaxPreps. MaxPreps lists the team at 3-2 overall, while NJ.com's award write-up listed the record at 3-1. The difference is a non-league loss to Pingry on Aug. 29.

The Millers' season has been a study in momentum shifts. After the 31-0 loss at Pingry to open the year, Millburn blanked Dwight Morrow 26-0 on Sept. 4. A 14-12 league loss to Dover on Sept. 10 dropped the team to 1-2. In that game, captain Owen Skinner was sacked and lost possession in the final minutes, and receiver Brandon Rey scored a fourth-quarter touchdown that pulled Millburn within two points, according to The Miller, the school's student newspaper.

Since then, the Millers have won two straight, shutting out Bergenfield 7-0 on Sept. 19 before the blowout at Kennedy.

Carames joins Livingston senior running back Abel Paul among area players recognized by the SFC this fall. Paul won Offensive Player of the Week for Week 3 after rushing for 245 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries in the Lancers' 22-12 win over Montclair on Sept. 19, as NJ.com reported. Paul, a Lafayette commit, has 3,289 career rushing yards.

Millburn travels to Bergen Tech in Hackensack on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. for its next league game. The Millers then visit Belleville on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
