Nico Hilas scored three touchdowns and rushed for 101 yards as Millburn defeated Bergen Tech 37-6 on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Millburn High School.
The senior carried the offense with a 48-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, a 23-yard receiving touchdown on a pass from quarterback Brandon Rey, and a 3-yard scoring run. He added 31 receiving yards to his rushing total. Millburn built a 37-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
Rey had an efficient night, completing 3 of 4 passes for 65 yards and adding 51 rushing yards and a 13-yard touchdown run. Hugo Gurijala chipped in 41 yards on five carries as the Millers piled up 265 rushing yards as a team.
The defense was just as dominant. Connor Neary grabbed two interceptions, returning one 35 yards for a touchdown. Hunter Vo and Collin Kelly each picked off a pass, giving Millburn four forced turnovers. Troy Chastain led the unit with seven tackles. Bergen Tech managed its only score in the fourth quarter.
The win improved Millburn to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Super Football Conference (SFC) Ivy Gold division, according to NJ.com and the NJ high school sports schedule. The record is head coach Dan Guyton's best start since 2023, and the three-game winning streak keeps the Millers in the hunt for first place alongside Belleville, Bergenfield and Dover. Bergen Tech fell to 2-4.
Millburn had allowed only six points combined in its three previous victories before the Bergen Tech game. That defensive stinginess has been a hallmark of the streak.
After the Sept. 25 win over Paterson Kennedy, senior captain Owen Skinner told The Miller in a Sept. 30 article: "Our goals for the rest of the season are to finish first in our division and then make the playoffs and hopefully go to the Ivy Championship."
Millburn travels to Belleville on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.
