Livingston's fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Festival returns to the Oval on Sunday, Sept. 20, with a flag raising, a parade, live music and free family activities.

Sazón Livingston and the Livingston Committee for Diversity and Inclusion (LCDI) are co-producing the event, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Livingston Gazebo on Robert H. Harp Drive. Admission is free.

The day starts at 12:45 p.m. with a flag raising at Livingston Town Hall, followed by a Parade of Flags that winds to the Gazebo.

From there, the stage lineup includes Zumba, a Peruvian dance performance by the Consulado Peruano and Yale University Mariachis. Later acts feature a tango set by Euforia Dance Studio, the México Dance Team led by Cris Campos, Ecuadorian group Balcón Andino and singer Félix Sánchez. A cumbia band closes the music at 5 p.m.

The festival began in 2023, when then-high school senior Jessica Aldana saw that Livingston celebrated many of its cultural communities but had no event for Latinos, Patch reported. Aldana enlisted Latina Moms of Livingston, a Facebook group led by her mother, Lorena Aldana, along with Assemblywoman Rosaura Bagolie and teacher Laura Tamayo to launch what has become an annual tradition.

Six food trucks will line the Oval, according to the township's event listing: Viva Guacamole, Cubita Truck, Deluxe Truck, Lomo Truck, Little Café lemonade stand and Scoop Theory ice cream.

Face painting and a 360-degree spin photo booth operate from 2 to 4 p.m. Two bouncy houses run from 2 to 5 p.m. EST Soccer Academy hosts soccer drills at 3 p.m. on the lawn, and Creatif Art Academy runs a kids' corner from 1 to 5 p.m.

Livingston High School's club Her Roots Her Power will offer arts and crafts. Spanish teachers from Los Profes del Sabor lead mini-piñata making and trivia all afternoon.

A piñata break starts at 3:35 p.m. inside the Gazebo, followed by a DJ set and dancing.

The LCDI is also recruiting new members. Residents interested in volunteering can apply at livingstonnj.org/Volunteer.
