A sculptor whose work sits in museum collections across New Jersey and a self-taught artist whose stamp-covered dress ended up in Ripley's Believe It or Not! are sharing wall space at the Arts Council of Livingston's newest show. "Oh, the Stories We Could Tell..." opens with a free public reception Sunday, July 26, at 1 p.m. at the ACL Gallery.
Maria Domenica Lupo, a Newark native with a doctorate in medical and health humanities from Drew University, began her sculptural training in Cennina, Italy, through a Rutgers program. "I found my cultural roots as well as my artistic heritage as a sculptress in Cennina," Lupo has said. Her work now sits in the collections of the Morris Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Newark Public Library, the State Museum in Trenton, and the Zimmerli Museum, among others. She's also a NJ State Council on the Arts Fellowship recipient and teaches as an adjunct professor at Montclair State and Caldwell University.
Audrey Yankielun left the corporate world to pursue art full time, blending stamp collecting, dressmaking and quilting into intricate works made entirely from genuine used postage stamps — with a strict rule that no stamp issue repeats within any stripe or patchwork pattern. One of her themed wearable dresses now sits in the permanent collection of Ripley's Believe It or Not!, a testament to just how unusual her medium really is.
Both artists will host free Sunday afternoon demonstrations throughout August starting at 2 p.m., with Saturday workshops planned during the exhibit's run through Aug. 30.
The ACL Gallery sits on the former Evergreen Miniature Horse Farm, a Green Acres-preserved property complete with a gazebo, a stream, and several original barns. On opening day, a free jitney will run between the Trinity Church parking lot and the gallery from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who'd rather not drive.
Regular gallery hours are Fridays 3-7 p.m. and weekends 1-4 p.m.
