Seven candidates have filed to run for three open seats on the Millburn Board of Education, with voters deciding the race on Tuesday, November 3.
The Essex County Clerk's Office confirmed the filings after the Monday, July 27 deadline passed, according to Patch. Three slates and one independent candidate will compete for seats that carry three-year terms.
Four will lose.
As we reported July 14, this is the first Millburn school board election under a new state law requiring 25 valid signatures on nominating petitions, up from the previous threshold of 10. The law took effect January 1, 2025, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association.
The candidates
Three candidates are running together under the slogan "Listen Educate Deliver":
- Anna Ostrovsky
- Prasoon Saurabh
- Christian Germa
Three incumbents are running for re-election under the slogan "Partners for Progress":
- Cynthia Longley Richards
- Priya Shivani
- Andrew Finkelstein
Richards, Shivani, and Finkelstein were elected to the board in November 2023, according to a November 2023 post from the Millburn Schools district account on X congratulating the newly elected members. Their current terms expire in January 2027.
Running independently under the slogan "Parents Raising Outcomes" is Gyanprakash Mishra.

School board members in New Jersey are nonpartisan and serve without pay. Ballots list candidates by slogan, not party.
The general election is Tuesday, November 3. Early in-person voting runs from Saturday, October 24 through Sunday, November 1. The voter registration deadline is Tuesday, October 13.
None of the seven candidates were reached for comment, and candidate backgrounds beyond incumbency status were not available from the clerk's filings at the time of publication.
