Cora Hartshorn Arboretum hosts free guided birding walks every Sunday in September, starting Sept. 6.

The walks run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the arboretum, 324 Forest Drive South in Short Hills. Longtime birders and arboretum staff will lead participants through the sanctuary's trails, helping them identify birds by sight and sound, according to Patch.

The program is free. Recommended for ages 12 and older, though all visitors are welcome.

The nonprofit sanctuary covers 16.45 acres of woodland and three miles of trails on land originally given to Cora L. Hartshorn by her father in 1923.

The arboretum has drawn fresh investment from the township. In May, the Millburn Township Committee approved Resolution 26-148, directing $125,000 in Open Space Trust funds over five years for native plant replanting and $47,000 to repair the outdoor classroom retaining wall.

Also at the arboretum on Sunday, Sept. 20, a separate paid program called "Among the Birds: Breath, Presence, & Guided Meditation" runs from 10:30 to 11 a.m., Patch reported. Diana of Happy Heart Yoga Shala leads the session. Admission is $15 per person or $20 for two. Advance registration is encouraged.

Visitors should check the arboretum's events calendar for updates before heading out.
