A Millburn police officer attempted to stop a 2024 BMW X5 near Millburn Avenue and Lackawanna Place on Sept. 4 after a records check showed the SUV had been reported stolen, according to the Millburn Police Department.
The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Edgewater on Aug. 26, nine days before the Millburn stop. The driver failed to stop and fled eastbound on Millburn Avenue, Patch reported Sept. 13.
The officer pursued the BMW but ended the chase due to safety concerns, the department said.
Minutes later, members of the New Jersey State Police Auto Theft Task Force located the vehicle in Irvington and disabled it. The task force is a statewide unit that coordinates with local agencies on auto theft investigations across municipal and county lines. Two people were taken into custody, including a 16-year-old juvenile.
Police identified the driver as Juwan Brice, 34, of Hillside. Brice was charged with eluding, receiving stolen property, and employing a juvenile in a motor vehicle theft. The eluding charge stems from the failed traffic stop on Millburn Avenue.
No charges against the juvenile have been publicly announced, and the department did not release the juvenile's identity.
The Sept. 4 chase is the second stolen-vehicle case to draw attention in Millburn this year. In July, Millburn Police officers were honored at a Township Committee meeting for recovering a stolen Dodge Challenger at the Mall at Short Hills, according to TAPinto.
Separately, FBI data released the week of Sept. 9 showed Millburn recorded just two violent crimes in 2025, well below state and national averages. That data does not cover property crimes such as auto theft.
