Toys R Us is coming to The Mall at Short Hills as part of a nationwide push to open 120 new standalone stores before the holidays.

The Short Hills location is among 120 new stores the company announced Sept. 17, NJ.com first reported on Friday, Sept. 25.

No opening date has been disclosed.

The expansion, carried out through a partnership with Go! Retail Group, will bring the total number of standalone Toys R Us stores from 40 to 160 by the holiday season. Go! Retail Group is a family-owned company based in Austin, Texas, that has operated Toys R Us standalone stores since partnering with brand owner WHP Global in 2023.

New stores will carry products from LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Pokémon and KPop Demon Hunters. Select locations will also feature Creator Studios, dedicated spaces for influencers and toy brands to create content and host product launches, along with candy shops and cafés.

It is not clear whether the Short Hills store will include those extras. Creator Studios are launching first at five existing locations, including the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, USA Today reported. The company said it plans to expand the concept to more stores after gauging results at those pilot sites.

How long the Short Hills store will stay open is also an open question. Alex Winkelman, Go! Retail Group's executive vice president of business development, told Marketing Daily that the new stores "will be open through the holidays and many well into 2027." She did not say how many will become permanent.

The expansion comes during the toy industry's strongest first-half performance in six years. Research firm Circana reported that U.S. toy dollar sales rose 17% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to Marketing Daily.

Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2017 and closed its remaining U.S. stores in 2018. The chain briefly returned with locations in Paramus and Houston in 2019, but both closed in 2021. WHP Global acquired the brand that year and opened a two-story flagship at American Dream in East Rutherford that December. The chain also operates about 400 shop-in-shop locations inside Macy's stores nationwide.

No lease details, store size or exact location within the mall at 1200 Morris Turnpike in Millburn have been announced. The company has not set an opening date for the Short Hills store.
