Livingston residents can dispose of unused or expired medications for free, around the clock, at two permanent drug drop boxes inside police headquarters at 333 S. Livingston Ave.
The Livingston Police Department is highlighting the boxes ahead of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, according to a township alert. The lobby is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and drop-offs are anonymous.
The boxes accept prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and pet medications. Residents can drop items in their original containers or in sealed plastic bags. The township asks that personal information be removed from labels before drop-off.
Syringes and EpiPens are not accepted. The township's drug drop box page has information on disposing of sharps separately.
The Livingston Police Department set up the boxes in partnership with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team of Essex County, known as ADAPT, and the Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee. Collected medications are transported to a licensed facility for safe disposal, according to ADAPT's program page.
Livingston is one of 15 Essex County municipalities with year-round collection sites through the ADAPT partnership. The program encourages residents to remove identifying details from containers before dropping them off.
The national effort has grown steadily. During the most recent Take Back Day in April 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration reported that 4,417 collection sites across the country gathered 321 tons of medications, according to DEA data. The program has collected more than 10,500 tons since it began.
The West Essex Tribune first reported the township's reminder.
Millburn residents also have a nearby option. The Millburn Police Department, at 435 Essex St., operates its own year-round drop box through the same ADAPT program.
