Millburn and Livingston high schools will field girls flag football teams in spring 2027 after the Super Football Conference (SFC) placed both programs in its new American White division.

The SFC released divisional alignments for 59 schools on Friday, Oct. 9, NorthJersey.com reported. Girls flag football becomes an officially sanctioned high school sport in New Jersey in spring 2027, and each school will play 10 to 11 games. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) set 14 as the maximum.

State playoffs begin May 24, 2027.

Millburn and Livingston will share the American White division with Barringer, East Orange, Mount St. Dominic, Newark Tech and Shabazz. The Millers and Lancers land in the same division for the sport's inaugural season.

The NJSIAA voted in May 2026 to sanction girls flag football as a varsity sport, with full implementation targeted for the 2026-27 school year, according to the Philadelphia Eagles' website. New Jersey became the 21st state to take that step. The Eagles had partnered with 30 NJSIAA member schools in South Jersey on a pilot program beginning in 2023, providing stipends, uniforms and equipment.

Colleen E. Maguire, NJSIAA executive director, said the sanctioning reflected a collaborative effort and credited the NFL and the Eagles for helping build the sport's foundation in the state.

Nationally, more than 102,000 girls played high school flag football in 2025-26, a 551% increase over four years, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, as Axios reported. Twenty-three states plus Washington, D.C., now sanction it as an official varsity sport. Flag football will also debut at the 2028 Olympics.

No head coach has been publicly announced for either Millburn or Livingston's program. Schedules, tryout dates and roster details have not been released.
