The Millburn Police Department's Community Policing Unit will host a Coffee with a Cop event Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Sunny Scrambled, 63 Main St.

The event coincides with the 10th annual National Coffee with a Cop Day. The Township of Millburn announced the gathering on X, inviting residents to stop by and meet officers from the community policing unit over coffee.

There is no agenda and no speeches. The idea is simple: residents sit down with officers over a cup of coffee and talk.

The national program, supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, is built on a straightforward premise. Most contact between police and the public happens during emergencies or high-stress calls. Those moments leave little room for trust-building. Coffee with a Cop creates a low-pressure setting where officers and neighbors can have a conversation without a crisis driving it.

"Coffee with a Cop is community policing at its core," former COPS Office Director Ronald L. Davis said on the program's official website.

The Hawthorne, California, Police Department launched the program in 2011, looking for better ways to connect with the people it served. Since then, the initiative has spread to all 50 states and more than 40 countries, with over 15,000 events held worldwide, according to the Coffee with a Cop organization.

The Oct. 7 event is part of a broader outreach push by Millburn's Community Policing Unit. Officers John Marone and Ed Dundon, along with Sgt. Travis Jiroux, bagged groceries and shared food insecurity resources during ShopRite's Bag for Hunger campaign in September 2026. The unit also hosted National Night Out at Taylor Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The event is free and open to the public. Residents with questions can contact the Millburn Police Community Policing Unit at [email protected] or (973) 564-7001.
