The Millburn Police Department is offering free home security assessments to property owners looking to protect against break-ins.
Through the department's Home Security Assessment Program, officers visit a residence, evaluate existing security measures and identify weaknesses. They then provide cost-effective recommendations to reduce the risk of burglary, according to the township's program page.
The Township of Millburn promoted the program on X, describing it as an effort to help property owners spot potential security weaknesses and areas for improvement. Residents can sign up for an assessment through the township website.
The program comes as the township reports a sharp drop in property crime. At the Aug. 11 Township Committee meeting, held at the Millburn Education Center, Mayor Frank Saccomandi reported that home burglaries and vehicle thefts had decreased by more than 90% since the beginning of 2024. Saccomandi said the trend put Millburn "on track for its safest year to date."
At the same meeting, Saccomandi recognized the Millburn Police Department for its successful National Night Out event. The meeting was attended by committee members Michael Cohen, David Cosgrove, Jamie Serruto and Ben Stoller.
Nearby, the picture looks different. The Livingston Police Department responded to two burglary calls on Sunday, Oct. 18, one successful and one unsuccessful, the West Essex Tribune reported.
Millburn and Short Hills residents interested in scheduling an officer-led assessment can reach the department at [email protected] or (973) 564-7001. A Home Self-Assessment Checklist is also available for download on the program's webpage.
